School Atmosphere

IES school in Hässelby Strand is turning out to be one of the best school in Stockholm. It has a good mix of students and teachers from different countries and different nationalities. 

The principal of IES Hässelby strand Ms Schäfer is very dedicated and supportive. She tries to encourage the students not only in studies but also in other activity. We tried to interview a few teachers in IES Hässelby strand to know their opinion about the school. 

We got very positive response. Mr Dent 26 years old teacher, commented that  "it’s a  great school and the start of school, has been good so far and students have been able to settle in." Mr Granström says "the school is very structured and thinks that its good that the school involves itself in extra activities as operation work day since it gives a possibility for so many students in Africa to study." Mr Joyce is also very positive to most of the things but he would like to have books since, no textbooks are used in music at present. Parents of IES Hässelby Strand also seem to be satisfied. They think that the teachers are very much involved in everything like if any student has some bad experience someday and is sad about something they call the parents to talk about it. We think that IES Hässelby Strand will give students great results as when students are happy in school its only then they try to give their best in studies.

What you didn't know about Mr. Pardo Garcia

Mr. Pardo Garcia.

Maybe you didn't know this about our own Spanish teacher, Mr. Pardo Garcia!

His full name is Benjamin Pardo Garcia and he is 33 years old. He has a dog named Loro which means parrot in spanish. In his spare time he likes to train, listen to all different kinds of music, watch movies and he loves to play rugby! He is a great rugby player and has been it for a while. He's position in rugby is center.

He moved to Sweden because he didn't like the education system in Spain. He dances Hip Hop and House. He's favourite soccer player is the old, famous legend Zinedine Zidane. An anonymous source says "My favourite subject is Spanish and Mr.Pardo Garcia is my favourite teacher".

We also asked the boy why he tought that way and he answered "Mr Pardo Garcia is so energetic and nice to everyone”, Another student said "Mr Pardo Garcia sometimes lets us play spanish card games which is really fun”. Most of the students think that he is one of the best teachers.

Will you be the next prize taker?

Ever wanted an award for the A you got on your latest maths test? Around 3 weeks ago some special students got awards at IES Hässelby Strand. Everybody in the school from year 7-8 have "Klassråd" at the same time. One or two times on a term all classes meet on "Klassråd" in the B-Building.

Prizes were then given out in special categories. Some students get awards for being a nice friend, some even got a prize for being a true gentleman! We have spoken with Daniella Hormos, student at IES Hässelby strand that got an award for the money she raised for the IESH School in South Africa.

What did you do to achive this prize? “ I collected 500 Kr for the school in South Africa. I had to work in the kitchen on operation workday and use some of my own money”, said Daniella.

What did you do and how did you fell when you got the prize? "I was myself and tried to be kind to everyone, I felt happy and honoured but it was very nervous to go up and stand in front of everybody in year 7 and 8”, said Emma.

Developing a New School

Almost one term has past, what has happened with the school?

This is how the school looks now but hopefully we will expand it and do it greater.

The new school IES Hässelby Strand just past their first term. It’s a new school and started 22/8-11, week 34. The building is from the old gymnasium Hässelby Gymnasium. Hässelby Gymnasium ended as a gymnasium because media line has been removed by the government.

In IES Hässelby Strand big changes are going to be made. The student council and the principal Sandy Schäfer has come up with an idea of building a climbing frame, a football field, a skate park and they also want to build a cafeteria so that the students can have a place to buy a sandwich or a cup of coffee.

Gabriel Ioannidis, student at IES Hässelby Strand said, “It’s fun and I enjoy bring here. It’s a bit cold, had been better if we had a cafeteria”. Viktor Sparrman, student at IES Hässelby Strand said, “It’s a great school for people.’’
Lia Österman, teacher at IES Hässelby Strand said, “It’s great, but a cafeteria, bigger common room and an aula would be better if we had them.”

Join a club!

Do you want to join a dancegroup? Or maybe a music club?Soon you can!

In many American and Canadian schools there are a lot of groups in school, such as cheerleading and American football. IESH wants to have a school where you do more than just study. All the teachers are very involved in different school groups.
The principal Ms Schäfer has visited students sport activities outside school, such as hockey matches and a dance show.

Our school

Ms Schäfer, ‘It’s difficult to have clubs when everybody ends different times, but I really think it would be fun with some more groups!’At the moment IESH has choir, bookclub and craftclub but other groups are maybe also going to start.
Ms Gauthier, teacher, ‘I´d like to start a dancegroup. I´ll have dance in ‘Choice’, so then I can see if there´s any interest. I would also like to have a bookclub for the older students.’
Mr Joyce, music-teacher, ‘I have started the choir. I don’t want to start any new club at the moment, but maybe when we got more instruments. The groups are good for new opportunities.’

In the choir are they now practicing for ‘Lucia’ the 13 of December.
Senior Pardo Garcia has also thought about starting a Spanish drama club!
Many students would like to join a club, and it’s a lot of ideas: Drama, Music, Football, Chess, Quiz, Movie and much more!
Samira Gomes, 7a, ‘I would love to have a music and drama club, and I will absolutely join if one starts!’
Fredrika Hagman, 5b, ‘I want a Quiz-club, and I would join if it starts one.’
IESH started in August 2011, and it’s already some groups at this school. Hopefully more groups will get started in this first year!

Great Status of School Food

The food at IES Hässelby Strand is definitely of the best in Sweden. There are many children that do not have as healthy and tasty lunches as we do at our school - some do not even have lunches. Credit for the food at our school mainly goes to the great kitchen staff but the school also invests in buying good products and equipment to prepare the food.

Fact is, too much food is wasted at our school and in the country as a whole. To prevent this we have some suggestions:
· Do not take more food than you are going to eat. Start with a small portion and then take more if you think it tastes good, which is always the case at our school.
· Take a wide variety of different food types. It is healthier and you can always take more later.
· Leave the lunch room shortly after you have finished your meal. This will allow the next group to find a table easier and allow them to have a more enjoyable lunch.

Ms. Schäfer, the principal, said the following, “At this school we think food is very important for the students to be able to perform good in class, therefore we prioritise the food highly. In one year we spend over one million Swedish kronor on the lunch.”

“The food is good, it´s as good as in Jönköping,” according to a former teacher from Jönköping.

IES Hässelby gives you the option of three different menus to choose from every day: meat, fish and a vegetarian meal. Head chef Caroline said the following, “It takes about 3 - 3.5 hours to make a meat stew.”

It is difficult to imagine that it takes so much effort to prepare a meal, but the quality is excellent. Do not waste food because it costs a lot of money and takes a lot of time and energy to prepare which is not good for the environment.

Football field at IES Hässelby Strand

Football field at IES Hässelby. In autumn 2012 there will be a new football field at International English School Hässelby (IES Hässelby) in Stockholm, Sweden. Ms. Schäfer, Principal at IES Hässelby said ”The football field will be done in autumn 2012 and it will maybe take 4-5 weeks to build it and it will be next to the basketball court. The field will be made of artificial turf, which I think the kids will love.”

Ms. Schäfer also explained why the field is so necessary,” The field we are about to build is very important because the kids will be active during the breaks”. Jesper Carlsson, 12, in class 6A at IES Hässelby was very positive about the football field. ” It will be fun because I like to play football". Mr. Baxter, 32, PE teacher at IES Hässelby commented about the field. ” The football field will be great because it will make the kids stay active during the break which is very healthy. It will also affect our PE lessons. We can play games that we can’t play now”.
