The Truth About the School Food

By 6C Reporters: Akrem, Lukas, Moa, Mea, Alex, Julia

Have you ever thought about what kind of food we have in school? To ensure that we all don´t make our own conclusions and think that all food is ecological we have done a survey to find out where the food comes from.

We have done a list of the most important things we found:
Meat
The meat we eat in school is seldom ecologic. It is ordered from Charkman. The meat often comes from Germany or Brasil.  The chicken comes from Brasil too, but everything is cut up and packed in Sweden.

Fish
The most common fish we get in school is Pangasius. Pangasius comes from Taiwan. Pangasius has been red-listed but isn´t now. Even if Pangasius isn´t red-listed it is almost as bad to transport it to Sweden from the other side of the world. We also get salmon in school. It comes from Norway and it transported fresh. We do not get cod so often because cod easily becomes dry when you cook it.

Fruit & vegetables
The school kitchen orders fruit and vegetables from Lokus Frukt & Grönt. Everything in the salad buffet is homemade. Lentils and beans comes dry to the school. On Mondays the school kitchen staff prepares the lentils and beans by cooking them and putting them in small bags. Every day they take one bag of each sort to create new, fresh and interesting mixes.

Winter fruits
The fruit is varied by the season: In August and September we get apples and pears and closer to Christmas we get mandarins and oranges.

The school kitchen staff at IES Hässelby Strand really enjoys their work. “We love to cook food for the students because they are so nice to us”, says one of the chefs. “We would like to serve only ecological food, but unfortunately we can´t afford that. In the future we hope on a bigger budget.”

What does the teachers think about the food?
We have interviewed Ms Malmsköld to find out what she thinks about the school lunch. “It is great!” says Ms Malmsköld. “Because it is high quality, and it is good salad. My favourite food is hotpot! And I don´t eat soup on the lunch. Mostly I clean up after have finished eating. I miss strong taco-sauce to the tacos and think that it can be a better mix off teachers and students at the tables."

What does the students say about the food?
Farhad in 6C likes to sit with his friends in the lunchroom. He gives the food 9 out of 10 points.
“I don’t give 10 points because I don’t like all type of fish”, he says.

The school food: Good or bad? You decide!
